4 Steps to Comfy and Cozy

This time of year I am always in the mood for comfy and cozy, whether it be attire or decor, the more comfort the better! It must be the chilly weather or holiday season that’s giving me all the feels, but I’ve got comfort on the brain and in the mood to share what’s giving me the warm and fuzzies this week. It’s all about getting your home cozy for the festive season! Here are 4 tips to get you on your way!

– Throw on the throws

Layering is always an easy way to add warmth and texture to a space. Think chunky knits or plush faux furs.

Interior Design: Jennifer Robin Interiors / Photogrpaher: Paul Dyer

-Warm up the patio

Have a fire lit before the guests arrive, extra decorative pillows for comfort and warm throws at hand.

House Beautiful / Design: Ruard Veltman / Photographer: Eric Piasecki

-Light extra lamps

You don’t have to have a dinner party just to turn on the ambient lighting! Turn on all of your lamps throughout the house to bring a warm glow to each space.

Interior Design: John De Bastiani / @johndebastiani

-Use a warmer palette

Whether you’re repainting or simply adding some seasonal decor, turn to the warmer tones to set the mood. Traditional Fall colors are always a good idea – think oranges, browns and plums.

Stay toasty, my friends!

The Wachs Mix: Holiday Gift Guide

Give the gift of light with something unexpected. Stepping outside of the gift box with a table lamp will bring a surprise like no other. I have fallen in love with this gilded iron bracelet lamp by Visual Comfort & Co.

Inspiration is priceless. A coffee table book is always a good idea when it comes to gifting – your special someone will be unwrapping hours of inspiration and a timeless addition to their coffee table decor. Christian Lemieux’s fabulous book, The Finer Things: Timeless Furniture, Textiles and Details, will make the perfect gift for those design aficionado’s in your life!

For that rockstar hostess in your life, unique barware never gets old. One of my favorites is a coaster set, a functional home accessory that can be left out as part of the decor. These black agate coasters from Aerin are perfection!

There couldn’t be a more perfect time of year to gift a stylish throw! Who doesn’t want to be wrapped up in chic threads while binge watching Christmas movies and sipping a favorite cocktail? This hand-loomed alpaca throw by Jonathan Adler is available in a variety of colors, but the orange had me at hello!

For the collector, or storer, box up a box! A decorative storage container is the perfect addition to a book shelf or vanity table. Go with something that will make a lasting impression and surely stand out. Mapleton Drive’s decorative sea urchin box is giving me heart eyes!

Screen Shot 2017-12-04 at 4.48.14 PM

Gifting 101: You simply can’t go wrong with a candle! I have shared the beloved Emily McCarthy Cocktail Candle in a previous post, but it just had to be shared again. I recommend gifting two, once the candle has seen its last flame, your friend will be left with two super chic tumblers.

A decorative tray can be used to serve delicious treats from the kitchen, as a center piece in the dining room, as a catchall in the living room or even hold hand towels in a powder bathroom. Go the extra mile when gifting and include some treats in your tray! Ralph Lauren Home’s Wyatt Bowl/Tray is the perfect choice for the refined equestrian lover.

Screen Shot 2017-12-04 at 4.50.57 PM.png

Wine – a gift that will bring nothing but cheer! The Williams Sonoma Wine Club offers subscriptions of front door vino delivery – once a month, or every second or third month. Surprise your special person with a membership filled with spirit and you will be the season’s finest gifter, hands down. Williams Sonoma also offers gift sets with selected wines, or the option to purchase bottles separately. And, add to cart!

Happy Gifting!

Artist/Designer Spotlight: Porter Teleo

I am wildly obsessed with the design duo of Porter Teleo – artist Kelly Porter and designer Bridgett Cochran. They have combined their enormous talent to develop a unique, hand-printed and hand-painted line of fabric and wallcoverings. Their work has been featured in many publications from, House Beautiful, Luxe, Veranda, Elle Decor and many more.

After I discovered Porter Teleo (and fell madly in love), I just had to speak with these ladies about their work, lifestyle, and inspirations.

Screen Shot 2017-10-10 at 12.13.05 PM

AW: How did Porter Teleo become who it is today?

BC: One small step at a time. It is wild to look back and see how far we have come.   I think Kelly and I shared a vision, an amazingly optimistic outlook, and a strong work ethic that all helped fuel our growth.

KP: Bridgett Cochran and I had a wild idea to bring the best of both worlds together – fine art from my background and interior design from her background.  We brainstormed ideas over dinner and a bottle of wine.  6 months later, due to a lot of hard work and some unique and fresh designs, we had a line!  We worked together to create the beginnings of the collection, we started tiny, and then built it up over time.

AW: Who are a few artists/designers you admire and why?

BC: I absolutely love Miles Redd’s work – every time I see a space that he has created I can tell it is him, not because the rooms are the same, but because they have such depth and character.   I am a big fan of Celerie Kemble as well, she always gives an unexpected twist that still feels completely  livable and I have never seen a room designed by Jeffrey Bilhuber that I wouldn’t want to live in.  As for artists – I also love Cy Twombly and am drawn to Helen Frankenthaler’s paintings, especially her palettes.

KP: I love Cecily Brown, Francesco Clemente, Cy Twombly, and all of the abstract expressionists from the 50’s.  Design-wise – I love Kelly Behun’s style, Nicole Fuller, Jackson Paige, and Miles Redd.  It’s hard to name those, because there are so many more!

AW: What are some of the things that influence your work?

BC: Color, natural order, contrasting values, and balance.

KP: Nature, organic form, botanical life, naturally created pattern, geology, Ancient art, religious art.

AW: What is a typical day behind the scenes at Porter Teleo?

BC: The best thing about the career that we have created for ourselves is that there is no typical day!  There is absolutely no opportunity to get bored here!  We might be working on a new collection for two days and quickly need to switch to digging in on a new marketing plan and then back to the studio to mix color and finalize new colorways for new collections. It is exciting and fulfilling and provides endless opportunities for learning new ideas and processes.

KP: We do a bit of everything!  It is always exciting – mainly because we are privy to information about the most exciting interior design going on in the world.  Our clients are top notch, so we see everything in the works, as we are creating patterns, product and color schemes for these amazing projects by the best designers in the world.  That is what I love about our days – that there is always inspirational info around us.

porterteleo

AW: What are your everyday essentials?

BC: The essentials change based on what we are concentrating on in the studio.   The one thing that is always essential is our team!  They are smart, creative, adaptable, interesting people.

KP: Paint, Ink, brushes, elevations, and a good creative team that is positive and ready to go!

AW: A typical day in your life includes…?

BC: Many hats! I feel so lucky to have a work life that allows me to enjoy my home life and my children as much as I do.   Kelly and I knew early on, and before we became mothers, that we both wanted to create a life that allowed us to express ourselves in our work while still leaving energy to feel alive in our personal lives.

KP: I keep really busy – I have two young daughters who mean everything to me, then I work hard at Porter Teleo, then when I get home and on weekends, I work a lot on my own paintings – oil on canvas.

5 Tips For Selecting the Right Rug

There are many different things to take into consideration when shopping for a rug for your home – what size will work best, what , is it worth spending the money? The right rug can pull a room together and act as the perfect finishing touch, while the wrong one can make a room feel awkward or look like an after thought. We don’t want the latter! So, here are some tips to take into consideration when you’re ready to start shopping for that perfect rug.

1. Size – First and foremost, don’t skimp on size. Choosing a rug that is too small for the space will just make your room look smaller. In a Living Room, your rug lays the foundation for the conversation area, you want it to support the furniture around it. No floating carpets here!

Sophie Paterson Interiors (Instagram)

2. Rug Pad – Don’t let this be an afterthought.  A rug pad not only offers protection against slipping and damaging your floors, but also adds a layer of comfort underfoot – especially to flat weave rugs.

3. Statement – A rug is so much more than a space filler or sound embracer, take this as an opportunity add a pop of color or punch of pattern to your room. Function can be fun too! (Bonus Tip: The pattern need not match everything in the room, focus on the color tones in the design and coordinate those with the colors in your artwork, accessories or fabrics.)

Terra Palmer Designs (Instagram)

4. Texture – When it comes to choosing a rug, the role of texture can play just as big of a part as color and design. If you want to keep it simple by avoiding bold colors and patterns but you still want your rug to stand out, choose a contrasting texture your flooring and other finishes. Leather sofa? Think fuller and thicker pile. Soft and warm upholstered seating? Consider a sisal or flat weave.

Luxe Magazine – Designer: Katy Allen and Rick Hermes

5. Investment – Your rug is undoubtedly going to be receiving a lot of foot traffic, so make sure you choose one that will stand the test of time. Don’t forget to include this vital addition into your overall budget – it’s worth a little investment!

Fabulous & Frightening

Let’s get one thing clear, when it comes to Halloween, orange is not mandatory. Traditional, yes, but certainly doesn’t warrant a slap on the wrist if you opt out. Don’t get me wrong, I am all about tradition and quite in love with many things orange, but today I’d like to explore the untouched side of Halloween decor with 3 different styles of tablescapes. A little bit of inspiration for that upcoming party you may be hosting amongst the knocks of Trick or Treaters.

Dark & Mysterious

For the dark side decorator, this tablescape gets in touch with the dark and mysterious side of Halloween. Midnight blacks, grand golds, sips of “poison” and creepy crawlers come together to create an element of spook and sophistication.

For lovers of Halloween, minus tradition, a natural palette with raw textures and pops of moody colors is the perfect combination. This table screams Halloween in the most subtle of ways.

Design Inspiration with Marie Flanigan

As a designer, I am always on the look out for my next source of inspiration and it can come from so many different places as well as in many different forms – a printed fabric on a blouse in a store front window, brushstroke colors on a piece of art, texture on a piece of pottery found at an estate sale, or simply through the work of others. Much of my inspiration comes while admiring the work of some of my most admired designers and artists, we all have our own unique style when it comes to designing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be influenced by the creative works of others.

Today I’d like to spend a moment appreciating one of my sources of inspiration – Marie Flanigan. She is an extremely talented designer, I see her work as natural elegance and always so full of light.

Upon “entering” any one of these rooms, you can’t deny the serene and calming vibe bouncing back at you. Neutral tones set off by flashes of gold, natural textures, tailored lines, all come together to create “refined elegance and innovative simplicity.”

An Andrea curation, with a little Marie flare, to get your juices flowing this fine Friday morning! Enjoy and remember, inspiration is around every corner!

Toning into Fall

Summer 2017 has been fulfilling and one to remember, but I am ready to greet Fall with open arms, and in 15 days I will be doing just that! I’m feeling ready for a reason to wrap a scarf around my neck, fill up on lattes and pumpkin spice aromas, and all things in warm tones. Who’s with me!? The color experts at Pantone released their Fall 2017 Fashion Color Report for New York Fashion Week, and they are cozy.
